Crime Again, some people have a misconception about Asian gangs in the streets. After all, what would be the basis for all the martial arts films we've all seen? One point to consider: We all have our views on capital punishment and other political items. Like in other parts of Asia, there is crime in China. But it's not predictably rampant as it is here in America. Criminals are dealt with very severely in China. Whether or not you are pro or con on the subject of capital punishment, it is a fact that executed criminals cannot repeat their offences. The streets of China are safe compared with ANY major American city, where hardened criminals are routinely released back into society over, and over, and over, and over . . . When you leave your hotel, you will not find yourself accidentally walking into a "bad part of town." And the chances of a violent encounter with a Chinese thug are remote at best. Just use your common sense and you'll be just fine in China. * Before you jump to the conclusion that the statistic above proves that China is beyond ruthless, remember China has 1.3 billion citizens. That's a staggering number of people, especially considering China is a poor nation. This sheer volume of people makes it impossible for China not to be #1 in any straight list of countries that use capital punishment. Before you criticize their criminal justice system, compare the safety record of their major cities with that of the major American cities near you.
